The Republic of Ireland staged a second-half comeback to end their miserable losing run, but their European Championship hopes are all-but over.This was a brave point earned by manager Don Givens’ side, but the defensive frailties that have undermined their performances again came to the fore.

On three minutes Liran Cohen curled in a cross to the far post where Moshe Ohayon headed past Aston Villa goalkeeper Wayne Henderson from eight yards.

Ireland were caught on the counter attack 10 minutes from the break as Gal Alberman’s low drive went underneath the advancing Henderson.

Ireland finally hit back in the 65th minute through Murphy, who celebrated his £70,000 move to Sunderland with his first goal at this level.

Ireland drew level in the 77th minute when Kevin Doyle tapped home from close range.

Ireland cannot now top the group as they trail leaders Israel by 10 points with three games left but they could still clinch second place and with it a play-off spot.
