Rep of Ireland 0 Switzerland 1

The Republic of Ireland lost their final qualifier when they wered defaeted by the only goal by Switzerland in Tolka Park.

Despite having nothing to play for Ireland produced a spirited display that deserved a little better than a defeat against a classy Switzerland side.

Joey O Brien and Stephen Wrad went close early on after being set up by winger Aidan Mc Geady.

Switzerland opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Pirmin Schwegler burst through the middle before feeding fullback Lichtsteiner on the right who whipped in a cross that although cut out by Paul Mc Shane fell invitiongly for David Degan who lashedthe ball home.

Me Gaedy and O Brien had 2half" chnaces but Switzerland always looked dangerous and Ziegler almost dfoubled the lead after 29 minutes when a misplaced pass by O Brien allowed Degan to put Ziegler through only for the winger to miss the target.

Ireland had plaenty of possession in the second half without really bothering Switzerland.

Ireland were denied an equalizer when Benaglio was foced to carobatically tip over a John Fitzgerald flick on header after Whelan had put the ball into the box.
