Doyle earns draw for Under 21s

Reading striker Kevin Doyle hit two goals as the Republic of Ireland Under 21s came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Northern Ireland in Lurgan on Tuesday night.

An Alan Sheehan own goal and a Sean Webb volley seemed to have settled the result in the North’s favour after just 50 minutes but Doyle when hammered Ireland back into the game.

Sheehan opened the scoring in unlucky circumstances when he headed a vicious free kick from Pat McCourt past goalkeeper Wayne Henderson and the goalkeeper was again beaten in the 50th minute when Webb volleyed home a Brian Gilfillan corner.

But Doyle got his first in the 60th minute when he hammered home the rebound after his first penalty was saved and he grabbed a second when Doyle sent Michael McGovern the wrong way from the penalty spot once more.

The Republic of Ireland Under 21 side to face Northern Ireland tonight in Mourneview Park, Lurgan has been named.

Republic of Ireland U21: Henderson (Aston Villa); Foley (Luton Town), Kelly (Tottenham Hotspur), Fitzgerald (Bury), Sheehan (Leicester City); Cregg (Arsenal), Whelan (Sheffield Wednesday), O’Brien (Bolton Wanderers), Tabb (Brentford); Murphy (Sunderland), Doyle (Reading).

NORTHERN Ireland Under-21s squandered a two-goal lead as their Republic of Ireland neighbours fought back to salvage a draw at Mourneview Park.

It all seemed to be going so well for Roy Millar's side.

They had dominated proceedings in the first half and had deservedly taken a 36th minute lead after the Republic's Alan Sheehan turned the ball past his own 'keeper whilst attempting to clear a Pat McCourt free-kick.

Then, six minutes after the interval, Sean Webb extended the home advantage with a well taken volley into the corner of the net.

However the Republic reduced the arrears on 64 minutes after Mark McChrystal conceded a penalty when he upended Jay Tabb.

Republic frontman Kevin Doyle missed the spot-kick but managed to blast home the rebound.

And there was a case of déjà vu just eight minutes later when Tabb was again brought down in the area, this time by Webb.

Once more Doyle stepped up to take the penalty but on this occasion he didn't need a second chance with a clinical conversion to bring the sides level.

Northern Ireland might have snatched victory right at the end when substitute Dean Shiels created an opening for himself only to fire into the chest of Republic 'keeper Wayne Henderson.
