THE Republic of Ireland U21 side recorded a scoreless draw with Romania in the UEFA U21 Championships Qualifying Round Group Six in Piatra Neamt this evening.

Harry McCue's charges will face the same opponents at Sligo's Showgrounds on Tuesday afternoon (3pm) as they bid to qualify for the finals of the UEFA completion for the first time.

Derrick Williams thought he had given Ireland the victory when he found the net in the 33rd minute but the goal was ruled out as the ball had struck the defender's hand in the build-up.

Early in the second half Ireland had a couple of chances to score. Sean Murray had a shot blocked in the 49th minute then Anthony Forde's 51st minute free-kick was stopped by keeper Laurenţiu Brănescu.

Irish keeper Aaron McCarey was called into action late on and did well to keep out an effort by Andrei Ciolacu in injury-time.

"It was a tough game, especially after such a long trip. An away point was a great return. We'd be happy with that," said Irish caretaker boss Harry McCue.

"We knew we'd be under pressure but the important thing is that we're still in the hunt. We've a big game against the Romanians on Tuesday so hopefully we can see these games off with a victory. We dominated the best part of second half and could have scored but it wasn't to be.

"I have to say our back five were brilliant, Aaron McCarey in goal and the defender Williams, Duffy, O'Connor and McGinty. Sean Murray did very well from an attacking perspective and tormented them all night."

Connor Smith took a knock on shin and Aiden O'Brien required four stitches for an eye injury but played on. Both should be okay for the game on Tuesday.
