“The free State XI" gained a meritous victory over Belgium at Liege yesterday. The crowd a record for Belgium was 25,000.

Ireland were two goals behind and drawing level with ten minutes remaining they gained their victory in dramatic style.

A violent storm of sleet during the interval made the ground very heavy and Ireland adopted to the ground conditions better than the home country.

Belgium went in front after 39 minutes when Raymond Braine the Belgium Centre forward struck. The goal had a stimulating effect on the team and they added a second again after 41 minutes when Ledent scored.

Ten minutes into the second half White reduced the arrears and two minutes later Lacey equalised.

The third goal scored after 30 minutes was the reward of the persistence of White.

Sullivan made the game safe when he scored from the penalty spot for “hands”

Lacey at inside left was man of the match closely pushed by Robinson and Mc Carthy.
