Statto: Debut for Amby Fogarty

West Germany 0
Republic of Ireland 1

Ireland began a mini continental tour (There were to be beaten 4-1 by Sweden in the next game) with a win over Germany. This was the first occasion that Ireland had defeated Germany on home soil.

In our previous game against Germany in 1956 we had 7 home bases players on the team - Ronnie Nolan was the only home based player this time round.

The win was based on a solid hard tackling defence which held the Germans at bay and with a solitary goal by Fagan Ireland scored a historic win.

Ireland took the lead after 31 minutes when after several well directed attacks - Sawitzki punched out a shot under pressure and Fagan was on hand to ram the ball home.

The Germans forced the issue for the remainder of the game but their attacks lacked co-ordination and were easily broken up.

Germany had a great chance of equalising after 70 minutes when outside right Steffan passed to Schmidt who delayed before passingto Vollmar whose powerful shot hit the crossbar.

After 79 minutes Nolan cleared off the line with Dwyer beaten.

Dwyer (West Ham United) and Hurley (Sunderland)and Dunne (Luton Town) were picked as the stars in this victory.

Ireland: Noel Dwyer (West Ham), Seamus Dunne (Luton Town), Ronnie Nolan (Shamrock Rovers), Mick McGrath (Blackburn), Charlie Hurley (Sunderland), Pat Saward (Aston Villa) capt, Amby Fogarty (Sunderland), Noel Peyton (Leeds Utd), Dermot Curtis (Ipswich), George Cummins (Luton Town), Fionan Fagan (Derby County)

Germany: Sawitzki, Giesemann, Erhardt, Schulz, Wenauer, Porges, Steffen, Schmidt, Brulls, Haller, Vollmar
